The Al Sabeel Masjid was at 48 Golden Gate Ave, San Francisco, California, 94102. (data) However, it has moved to 118 Jones St., San Francisco, California, 94102. (data) Nestled on a quiet street, with shops on either side, the masjid's beauty was hard to miss. The mosque was on the ground floor of a beautiful blue antique building in the Tenderloin area (an inner city neighborhood.) |
Where this masjid has been, and where it's heading...
“San Francisco is an open city; you can sit down with others and talk about Islam and have good communication. Our role is to respect others, and they respect you.” ~ Imam Safwat Morsy
Founded by Imam Safwat Morsy, in 2002, Al Sabeel masjid started off with a smaller community, and it had expanded in the next 11 years to include a lot of members from diverse ethnic backgrounds. A relocation has taken place due to the increasing number of community members wanting to join their mosque. It was also financially easier to relocate since the rent increased dramatically.
Thanks to the new and improved location, the mosque can now flourish with the numerous activities it holds every year. The biggest and busiest time of the year at Al Sabeel is the Holy month of Ramadan. Al Sabeel works on preparing Iftar for all their members daily, and during the last ten days of the month, they provide daily I'tikaf (night prayer.) Their Eid celebration is also a huge event. They have food, games, prayer and activities for all ages. Because they did not have a kitchen in their old location, the nearby churches allowed them to use their kitchens to cook and prepare the food for Ramadan and Eid.
Their collaboration with the churches had created over the years a lovely relationship; they celebrate christmas with the churches as well, and the churches participate in their Eid festivities.
The masijd has an Al Sabeel Sunday School where the children are taught Arabic and Islamic studies. Inside the masjid as well is a packed book store, where one can find anything from prayer rugs to beautiful Islamic ornaments to Islamic literature in both Arabic and English. Both the school and the book store had moved and will thrive with the improved masjid.
The masjid is also very proud of the summer camps it had held previously and is looking forward to the wider range of possibilities that come with the bigger and newer location. The number of children they can accommodate is now much higher, and they are planning a wonderful program for the coming year!
Al Sabeel also offers social support and services, like marriage counseling, for Muslims or non-Muslims. With the new location, they will be able to attract more individuals who are in need of help.
Whoever you are, wherever you're from, Al Sabeel is the right masjid for you. Their door is and will always be open for anyone who comes knocking.
